Does a therapy-specific application make sense for my organization?

Even if it does, how can I convince my management team to invest?

The best way to answer this question is to evaluate your organizational goals for being on an electronic medical record. Often, within a hospital or integrated delivery network, therapists are asked to evaluate or even use the hospital information system to document therapy care. While functionality is, of course, dependent on the HIS vendor, the clinical work flow and content that are key to optimizing clinical, financial, compliance and patient satisfaction outcomes is often significantly different from other clinical roles (such as nursing) that therapists are asked to emulate – at it’s worst, this can actually result in lower quality of care and less efficiency than paper.

Once you have established your organizational goals (see ‘how can I best prepare...’ above), a good way to understand whether you can work effectively and efficiently within you’re Hospital Information System (HIS) is to attempt to complete several full treatment cycle’s worth of documentation in your existing HIS, and in doing so evaluate whether you’re HIS will facilitate or inhibit your goals. Completing the same exercise with ReDoc will allow you to baseline against an alternative. Then explore the total costs of ownership, including any available or necessary customization of your HIS and maintenance over time, to balance out work flow efficiency.
